Elizabeth Wood was educated at the University of Adelaide, where she completed two postgraduate degrees in musicology. Her MA thesis (1971) was 'Index of Australian Opera - An Analytical Source Catalogue, 1843-1970' , and her doctoral thesis (1979) was 'Australian Opera, 1872-1970: A History of Australian Opera with Descriptive Catalogues.' In 1977 she went to New York as a Fullbright Visiting Scholar, and has taught courses there in music, literature and women's studies. She has been on the executive boards of New York Women Composers and the journal Cecilia. She has also contributed to the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. Her entries include: Moritz Huzenroeder, Isaac Nathan, Henri Kowalski and Sir William Robinson.
