BiographyHistory

Vera Read, whose family migrated from England to Queenstown, Tasmania, in 1921 was a writer from the time of her childhood. She was first published in Australia and New Zealand during the 1940s, and her poetry, plays and stories have been broadcast. In 1991 Read won the FAW (Tasmania) Hal Moore Memorial Poetry Award. She co-edited the social history prose collection, Round the Clock : A Collection of "Bits and Pieces" About New Town, Tasmania (1990). Her short stories have been published in the anthologies Ten Short Stories (1965) and Stories of Her Life (1979).

Read was at one time a member of the Tasmanian Opera Company and Tasmanian Light Opera Company.

She was married to Walter Lyle Read.
