BiographyHistory

Thomas Parmeter arrived in the colony of New South Wales 'with Captain Murray and Lieutenant Edgeworth, of the 33d Dragoons' under a charge of bigamy. Parmeter had been under the impression that his first wife and her 'paramour' had been taken prisoner by the French. The Globe Newspaper reported that Parmeter's wife had died and he subsequently re-married.

In Sydney, Governor Macquarie dealt leniently with Parmeter, allowing the latter to resume his career as a medical doctor. Parmeter worked at the Lunatic Asylum and in private practice. At some time during the 1820s, Parmeter suffered a 'sudden stroke of the palsy' and fell into debt. After that time, he turned his attention to writing and became an author - 'not from choice, [but] necessity'.

Notes

  • An advertisement appeared in the Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser on 4 August 1825 announcing a soon-to-be published volume to be titled 'Letters to My Uncle Toby; or, A History of New South Wales including his Nugae Poeticae, by T. Parmeter, M.D. formerly Assistant Surgeon to the Hereford Regiment, and late of the Lunatic Asylum, Castle Hill, etc. etc.'

Similar advertisements appeared in the Australian newspaper on 14 July and 1 September 1825, changing the poetry reference from 'Nugae Poeticae' to 'The Dream, a Satire' and 'Poetic Trifles' respectively. Both advertisements included the names of those who had subscribed to the volume, but it appears it was never published.

A further announcement in the Australian, on 22 September, suggests that Parmeter may be the author of 'The Adventures of a Dump'.
