In 1891 Gellatly joined the NSW Forestry Department as a cadet but resigned after twelve months to work on the Sydney Morning Herald. In 1896, under the pseudonym 'Yarrowee', he published a novel, Back From the Jaws of Death in which he examined injustice in the legal system. Gellatly was financial editor of the Herald for a time from 1905. In 1912 he travelled abroad to study economic and financial journalism.
