Born in 1872 in Ballarat, Francis Gellatly was educated at the Church of England Grammar School, Ballarat and at The King's School, Parramatta.
In 1891 Gellatly joined the NSW Forestry Department as a cadet but resigned after twelve months to work on the Sydney Morning Herald. In 1896, under the pseudonym 'Yarrowee', he published a novel, Back From the Jaws of Death in which he examined injustice in the legal system. Gellatly was financial editor of the Herald for a time from 1905. In 1912 he travelled abroad to study economic and financial journalism.
Gellatly studied law at the University of Sydney and although admitted to the bar in 1912 he never practised. He died of pneumonic influenza at the age of forty seven.
