Rowan Hewison graduated from the University of New South Wales with a Bachelor of Arts. He has been a soldier, carpenter, bookbinder and fisherman. He has contributed to Australian and international journals and magazines. Hewison won a grant from the Literature Board in 1977, and has lived in the Netherlands.
