An American editor of science fiction and fantasy, David Geddes Hartwell has worked for Signet (1971–1973), Berkley Putnam (1973–1978), Pocket (1978-1983), Arbor House (1983-85) and Tor Books (1985-). While working with Pocket he founded the Timescape imprint (1980–1985) and created the Pocket Books Star Trek publishing line. After joining Tor he spearheaded its Canadian publishing initiative and was influential in bringing many Australian writers to the US market. He was appointed Senior Editor at Tor in 1996. Hartwell chairs the board of directors of the World Fantasy Convention and, with Gordon Van Gelder, is the administrator of the Philip K. Dick Award. He holds a Ph.D. in comparative medieval literature.

In addition to editing thousands of science fiction books since 1970, Hartwell has published over 30 anthologies, including genre surveys The Dark Descent (1987), Masterpieces of Fantasy and Enchantment (1988), and The Science Fiction Century (1997); and with Kathryn Cramer The Ascent of Wonder (1994), The Hard SF Renaissance (2002), and the annuals Year's Best SF and Year's Best Fantasy. His non-fiction book Age of Wonders (1984) is an examination of the history and culture of the science fiction
