BiographyHistory

'Burraga Gutya - Ken Canning - is from the Kunja Clan of the Bidjara Peoples of South West Queensland. (Vagabond Press, 2019). He has lived and worked in New South Wales for almost 30 years and has a long history of political struggle and activism. His fight for equal rights for Indigenous Peoples led him to education in the 1980's. Gutya was the first recorded Murri graduate at UTS having finished his degree in Communications in 1987 and graduating in 1988. He is now one of the founding members of Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning at the University of Technology, Sydney and has been employed there doing what he regards as his passion, working with Indigenous students at a tertiary level. Ken's poetry has been translated into several languages. He wrote the play, "49 Days a Week" as well as a half hour film script titled "Cocky on a Biscuit Tin".' Burraga Gutya, his language name, started writing over 40 years ago from a prison cell in the old Boggo Road Jail in Brisbane, learning how to read and write from a fellow inmate. He worked for many years in Aboriginal Education, and was a founder and former Academic and Cultural advisor at the Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning.
