When a man is accused of fraud and takes flight, fleeing the authorities and leaving behind his family, his wife, Damaris Cudworth (who has two small children) accepts the aid of her brothers-in-law, Oscar and Huon. They all live together largely isolated from society for over twelve years, in a Queensland bush-house in Moreton Bay. Things begin to change one day with the arrival of a telegram.
