Graham Rowlands was educated at the University of Queensland, completing an MA thesis on Oscar Wilde in 1972. While in Queensland, he was editor of the student magazine Makar (1966-67) and published Stares and Statues (1972), his first book of poetry and the first volume of the Gargoyle Poets series.

Rowlands moved to Adelaide in the early 1970s and was associated with the Friendly Street group of poets, editing No 9 Friendly Street Poetry Reader (1985). He was for many years poetry editor of Overland. Once described as 'a one-man poetry industry' (cover of his Selected Poems) Rowlands has been widely published; he has published several volumes of poetry and has a collection of several hundred uncollected poems.

In 1978 Rowland completed a PhD in American studies at Flinders University. He has since worked as a literary journalist, educational editor and lecturer in Australian politics and crime prevention. Since 2003 he has taught Creative Writing at Flinders University.

Other works by Rowlands published by the Adelaide College of Technical and Further Education include course books on English expression, creative writing and freelance journalism.
