1 Sublime and Gothic Relations in Nineteenth-Century Australian Poetry Michael Farrell , single work criticism

This chapter considers how nineteenth-century poetry in Australia adapted European conceptualisations of the sublime and the gothic to articulate a literal inability to settle on the land. It argues that settler poetry has a difficulty with being grounded: its representations have a tendency to hover, sublimely, above the surface of the earth; or, if forced under, they refuse to simply die: but live on, as gothic, revenant, voices. It draws on popular and canonical examples like A. B. (Banjo) Paterson’s “The Man from Snowy River” and “Waltzing Matilda,” Adam Lindsay Gordon’s “The Sick Stockrider,” and Mary Gilmore’s “Old Botany Bay,” as well as examples that have been sourced from historical archives. '

'Although other related questions may arise, primarily I'm dealing with the questions of: how writing about poetry is possible, and how writing poetry is possible. Georg Simmel says of Kant, `[he] could propose and answer the fundamental question of his philosophy, "How is nature possible?", only because for him nature was nothing but the representation of nature'. In determining to talk of poetry, I want to emphasise that I am talking as a poet, and that writing poetry is, for me (though it has not always been), a daily practice, and that if you are wondering where this paper is going, it is going, ultimately, towards practice. Perhaps, then, the term 'poetry' gets in the way, because of the nature of its Anglo-European representation, based on a veritable soup of nineteenth and twentieth century clichés, added with a few skerricks of troubadour bone, or Chaucer tale, Shakespeare plot, Romantic image, biographical, as much as lyrical, thrown in, and perhaps a waft of the ghost of Homer over the pot. That's without even considering the considerable influences of Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Turkic, Egyptian, and Arabic, poetry.' (Introduction)

'The title of Ann Vickery’s latest book of poems, Bees Do Bother: An Antagonist’s Care Pack, is longer, more complex, and more avowedly academic than is conventional. A number of questions might be asked of it: are the bees metaphorical, being the most basic. In other words, are the bees human? That what ‘bees do [is] bother’ does not clarify, but rather thickens, the meaning of the first part of the title. Bothering seems like a human activity, and suggests, both semantically and sonically, the notion of a ‘bee in a bonnet’ (‘Bad Hat’): but while having a bee in your bonnet is not a passive image exactly, it does suggest being subject to the bee, of the bothering being done to the one with the bonnet, as opposed to being the bee that is doing the bothering.'(Introduction)
