Darwin-based writer Andrew McMillan accompanied the band Midnight Oil on a tour of the Northern Territory in the 1980s. (The group became the subject of his book Strict Rules.) McMillan's experience in Indigenous communities during that tour led to a strong interest in Aboriginal culture and his 'adoption' into the family of Mandawuy Yunupingu. McMillan has been deeply engaged with the communities of East Arnhem Land as evidenced in his award-winning book An Intruder's Guide to East Arnhem Land.
McMillan is also the author of several non-fiction books including Catalina Dreaming: Rescues, Exciting Missions and Other Stories about the Famous Australian Flying Boat of WWII (Sydney : Duffy & Snellgrove, 2002).
