Ivy Alvarez grew up in Hobart. Her poetry has been published in Australia, Canada, the USA and online. She received a commendation in the Daffodil Day Arts Awards for Poetry, and won the Great Age Melbourne Writers' Festival Poetry Slam in 2000. In 2001, Alvarez participated in a Development Forum at the Varuna Writers Centre, New South Wales.
Her long and short poetry collections include Disturbance (2013), Mortal (2006), The Everyday English Dictionary (2016), and Hollywood Starlet (Chicago: dancing girl press, 2015). She has been a MacDowell and Hawthornden Fellow, and as of 2017, had been nominated three times for the Pushcart Prize.
Alvarez first visited South Korea in 2011 as part of an Australia-Korea Poetry Tour exchange, organised by Cordite Poetry Review and Asialink, and in 2012 she was a guest at the Seoul International Writers' Festival.
She has lived in Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, and relocated to Auckland, New Zealand, in 2014.
