BiographyHistory

Gyorgy Faludy, Hungarian poet, was arrested in July 1950, charged with 'counter-revolutionary activities and imprisoned. After his release ca. 1958 he left Hungary for London. While imprisoned, he wrote a poem about Western Australia, inspired by memories of an Australian stamp, part of his childhood stamp collection, bearing the image of the black swan, the state emblem of Western Australia.(Source: Quadrant 3.1 (1958-1959): 43-52)
