Joseph Sheridan Moore was a Benedictine monk and was for a time headmaster of Lyndhurst College, Glebe. He left Lyndhurst in 1856, at about the time he briefly edited the Freeman's Journal. During the 1850s he was associated with the literary group who founded the magazine the Month, where the poetry of Henry Kendall (q.v.) was first published. He edited the publication for a brief period during the absence of Frank Fowler (q.v.). Moore was a popular literary lecturer and his published discourses included The Life and Genius of James Lionel Michael, with Fifteen Years' Experience of Literary Life in Sydney (1868), delivered at the School of Arts, Sydney, and Byron: His Biographers and Critics (1869), delivered before the Australian Patriotic Association.
