BiographyHistory

Avraham Cykiert is a survivor of Auschwitz and Buchenwald. His life was spared by the SS on account of the amusing poetry he wrote. Following the war, his short stories, poems and memoirs of the Lodz ghetto were published in Yiddish journals in London, Paris, New York and Montreal.

Arriving in Australia in 1948, he began working for the Yiddish Post and later for Yiddish Radio. Cykiert continued to write in Yiddish until 1993, when he began writing in English. In that year two of his plays were performed in Melbourne: The Mighty and the Condemned and Emperor of the Ghetto. [Source: Yiddish Melbourne]
