As a young man, Francis Myers had been a member of William Bede Dalley's set. His literary productions were varied and included drama, short stories, and novels as well as numerous non-fiction works, including Albury (a pictorial history of the area) and The Coastal Scenery, Harbours, Mountains and Rivers of New South Wales (Sydney: Govt. Printer, 1886). He was also co-author (with Frank Hutchinson) of The Australian Contingent (Sydney: Govt. Printer, 1885), an account of the Australian troops sent to the Sudan.

However, the bulk of Myers's work consisted of his contributions, frequently under the pseudonym 'Telemachus', to newspapers and periodicals, particularly the Argus and the Bulletin. On his death, Lone Hand claimed that 'no man of to-day wrote with a more glowing pen of the soul of the continent - latent in its forests and plains, expressed in the deeds of its great men. A noble eloquence his pen commanded at its best.'
