BiographyHistory

Alfred Marks is the son of a black African woman and a diplomat working in the former Portuguese colony of Mozambique. He grew up in rural Zimbabwe with Afrikaner parents before being placed with an urban Jewish family in South Africa. After working as a fireman and a gamekeeper, Marks emigrated to Canada in 1968 where he undertook university studies. After a decade in Canada he moved to Australia. Marks has worked as a teacher, journalist and shopkeeper.
