BiographyHistory

William Howitt wrote numerous books in England, publishing approximately 180 works in collaboration with his wife Mary Botham (q.v.). His publications included Colonization and Christianity: A Popular History of the Treatment of the Natives by Europeans in all Their Colonies (1838). The couple were friends with Hans Christian Andersen.

Howitt visited Victoria from 1852 to 1854 to seek a fortune on the goldfields with his two sons. There, he was reunited with his brothers Richard (q.v.), and Godfrey, a doctor. Howitt returned to England, publishing works about Australia which included Lectures on Transportation (1863) and The History of Discovery in Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand: From the Earliest Date to the Present Day: With Maps of the Recent Explorations, from Official Sources. (1865). During his later years, Howitt made his home in Rome.
