BiographyHistory

Edwina Harvey is a artist, writer, and editor from Sydney, Australia.

Born and raised in Waverley in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, Edwina Harvey is a self-confessed 'whale and dolphin geek', who has been writing, primarily in the science-fiction genre, for most of her life. In 1997, her short story 'Restitution' placed equal third in the Mary Grant Bruce Awards for children's literature, and she later expanded it into the young adult novel The Whale's Tale (the first title to be published by Peggy Bright Books).

In addition to The Whale's Tale, Harvey has written short stories for a variety of anthologies and magazines, including Aurealis, Thrillogies, and Grass Roots. A member of the Andromeda Spaceways Publishing Cooperative, she also edits for its magazine, Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine (including, to date, issues 12, 24, and 33) and has also blogged at Wired 4 Teens.

Since her first works were published, Harvey has won or been nominated for several awards. The Whale's Tale, for example, was shortlisted for both the inaugural George Turner Prize and the Emma Darcy Awards. She has also won and been placed in a number of ASTREX (Star Trek Club of NSW) annual literary competitions and has two Australian SF Media Awards (ASFMA). In addition, Harvey has twice been 'Highly Commended' in the Mary Grant Bruce Awards, has won three Ditmar Awards for the Australian SF Bullsheet (with Ted Scribner), and shared a Ditmar with the Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine co-operative.

Away from her writing and editing career, Harvey works as a librarian at the University of New South Wales.

'Edwina Harvey's short fiction embraces the everyday, the faraway, the otherworldly. The 'stuff' in these stories ranges from the quest for mythical gold or the exploration of far-flung vistas of the Galaxy to the desire to simply enjoy the sunshine, while the 'things' may have wings, fangs, horns, or a variable number of limbs.

'(The 'things', of course, are also people.)

'The earliest of these stories were first published over three decades ago, while the most recent are new to this volume.'
