BiographyHistory

Born in Belfast, Shirley Lewis grew up in Ballymena. As a young woman she emigrated to Australia with her new Australian husband. When her marriage ended she stayed in Australia.

She has had a varied career, working as a journalist, teaching English to migrants, and for 20 of her 30 years in Australia she was an acupuncturist. In 1990 she published Notes on my Madness, and she made two films about Aborigines. Then she launched Australia's first nationwide campaign against the excessive use of plastic bags.

In 2001, she returned to Ballymena to care for her parents. Lewis continues her campaign in Ireland.
