BiographyHistory

After travelling to Australia as a ship-steward Goodge jumped ship in Sydney in 1882 and spent the next twelve years in outback New South Wales. He contributed verse to several papers and, as a journalist, worked on a number of regional newspapers. Goodge became editor and then part-owner of the Orange Leader before moving to Sydney as a freelance writer and writing a weekly column for the Sydney Truth.

A prolific writer of poetry, Goodge's poems are filled with bush identities and tall tales of the bush. Writing mostly for the Bulletin, Goodge became known for his comic journalism and was thought to be one of Australia's best writers of light verse. He also contributed lyrics for songs, among them 'Sons of New Britannia: Australian Patriotic Song' (music by Nicholas J Gehde, 1880s).
