BiographyHistory

John Kerr was the eighteenth Governor-General of Australia (1974-1977). He dismissed the Labor government of Gough Whitlam on 11 November 1975, marking the climax of the most significant constitutional crisis in Australian history. Kerr studied law at the University of Sydney, graduating with first class honours and the University Medal. He was called to the New South Wales bar in 1938.

Kerr became a Queen's Council in the 1950s and over the course of the following decade became one of Sydney's leading industrial lawyers. In 1966 he was appointed a judge of the Commonwealth Industrial Court, later serving in other judicial positions, including Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 1972. He was knighted in 1974, the same year he became Governor-General.
