Born of Scottish parents in Australia, Elizabeth Kata spent a decade from 1937 living in Tokyo after marrying into a Japanese family. As well as writing for television, Kata spent two years in Hollywood as a scriptwriter. Her first novel Be Ready with Bells and Drums (1961) was produced as a film, A Patch of Blue, that won a Writers' Guild of America award in 1965.
