BiographyHistory

Pino Bosi was born at Tolmino, Gorizia, Italy (now Slovenia), of an Italian father and an Austrian mother. He failed to complete high school in Italy because of his emigration, but studied extensively in Italian, French, English and Latin literature. In Australia he worked in many different jobs (railway porter, farmer's and builder's labourer, fruitpicker, salesperson, clerk, scriptwriter and journalist), until he was offered a position with the paper La Fiamma in Sydney. He then continued to work with the Italo-Australian press including Croce del Sud and La Critica. Later, he became the NSW editor of Il Globo and editor of Settegiorni and, between 1966 and 1968, worked as a journalist for the Daily Mirror and as an occasional columnist for The Australian.

In 1970 he established the publishing company Kurunda Publications which published several of his own works as well as two magazines. He was the founder and editor of the magazine Roba Nostra, 1976-77, and Australia Ieri Oggi Domani, published from 1984 to 1989. His writing has also been published in La Critica, Esaurito, The Sunday Mirror, The Australian, Cleo, Vogue International and The Reader's Digest. Actively involved in the establishment of ethnic radio and multicultural television in NSW since the early 60s, he worked for various radio stations, co-ordinating the Italian language program on Radio 2EA between 1975 and 1981. He also worked as an occasional reporter on the ABC TV program Four Corners, as a commentator on European affairs for the Today Show on Channel 9, and as a presenter of children's programs on SBS TV. He has been a former State Chairperson of the Ethnic Broadcasting Advisory Committee, the Foundation Chairperson of the Association of Ethnic Broadcasters and Coordinators, and the Foundation Vice Chairperson of the Ethnic communities Council of NSW. He has been a secretary of the Italian Welfare Centre (Co.As.It.) and representative of Australia's Italians in the Consultative Committee for Italians Abroad (CCIE). He was made a Knight Commander of the Italian Republic and was awarded the Jubilee Medal and made a Member of the Australian Order (AM). He also received a Peace Commendation from the United Nations Association of Australia.

He won first prize in the Il Corriere d'Australia short story competition in 1955, a commendation in the Eco Di Bergamo competition for short stories in 1965, and third prize in the International Literary Competition Larius-Manzoni d'Oro for a novel in 1976. His work has been read on Radio programmes in Australia, Great Britain and New Zealand. He has read his poetry in the Ensemble Theatre for the Dante Alighieri Society and has given many public lectures and addresses in a variety of venues, including schools, universities, churches and museums.
