Born in the north-east of England, Barry Argyle arrived in Australia as a young man, where he studied at the University of Adelaide. Returning to England via teaching positions in Germany and at the University of Geneva, he completed his studies at the University of Leeds, and taught at the University of Sheffield. He arrived in Canada in 1969, where he took up a teaching position at York University in Toronto.
