BiographyHistory

Roy McGregor-Hastie lived in Australia in the 1940s and 1950s before returning to London in 1957. It is unclear if he returned to Australia.

During his time in Australia he was associated with the Sydney based Poetry Society of Australia and has a letter from London published in Vol. 4. No. 12 issue of Prism, December 1957. Correspondence with the Society of Australian Writers in London in 1957 provides some biographical information. He claimed to have been Vice President of the Poetry Society of Australia in 1955-56, the editor of The New Nation, and a poetry critic for the ABC. However, it appears McGregor-Hastie had a rather inflated understanding of his contribution to Australian poetry. Under the variant spelling Roy MacGregor-Hastie, he published numerous non-fiction, biographical and travel works unrelated to Australia.
