McAllister's parents were second-generation Australian with Scots-Irish background and he was raised in Brisbane. After some years employed by a national packaging company, he enrolled in Chinese at university. Since then, McAllister has worked as a graphic artist, sold advertisements for country music radio, written features for national maagazines and newspapers, and studied palaeoanthropology at the University of New England.
