Gordon Neil Stewart was brought up and educated in Sydney. He read the Bulletin, Henry Lawson (q.v.) and Banjo Patterson (q.v.) from an early age. Stewart lived in Paris for part of the 1930s and later in London. From 1940 to 1946 he was in the British Army, serving as a captain in a gunner regiment in Burma. After the war he returned to Australia and worked in technical journalism. He lived in Woollahra, Sydney, and later Bathurst, New South Wales. Stewart wrote a history of the Chartist movement, The Fight for the Charter (1937) and a biography of the French revolutionary theorist Louis Auguste Blanqui (1939) that had a Left Book Club edition. Another historical work, Cloak and Dagger War, listed in Australian Stories of Horror and Suspense, has not been located.
