David Caesar grew up on his grandparents farm at Turlinjah in the Moruya district of southern New South Wales and began making animated Super-8 films while still at school.
After finishing high school he went to the USA as an exchange student. On his return, he worked as a truck driver before moving to Sydney, where he attended the Australian Film Television and Radio School. After graduation he worked on productions for the ABC, SBS, Channel Nine and BBC television and has also directed rock video clips.
His first feature film was Greenkeeping and in 1996 he wrote and directed Idiot Box, followed in 2000 by Mullet. He has also worked on documentaries and television dramas.
