Brian Stonier was appointed Managing Director of Penguin (Australia) in 1961. In 1965 Brian Stonier, Geoffrey Dutton and Max Harris left Penguin (taking production manager George Smith with them) to found the independent paperback publishing company, Sun Books.
In April 1971, when Sun Books was acquired by Macmillan, Stonier was appointed Managing Director of Macmillan Australia, a position he retained until his retirement in 1998.
