Anne Brewster completed Honours English at the University of Adelaide and a PhD on post-colonial literatures of South-East Asia at Flinders University. She taught at the South Australian Institute of Technology in the early 80s, was a lecturer at Curtin University from 1994 to 1998, a Writer-in-Residence at Kalgoorlie for a period in 1995, and at Flinders University in 1996. In 1999, she commenced teaching at the University of New South Wales. She was also Poetry Editor of Southern Review.
Brewster was a foundation member of Friendly Street Poets and has continued to have a close association with them. She organised the disk readings in Perth, and has read on Radio 5UV, 5MMM and the ABC. She has also published critical works including Literary Formations: Post-Colonialism, Nationalism, Globalism (1995) and Reading Aboriginal Women's Autobiography (1996).
