BiographyHistory

Lucas was educated in England at Shakespeare's Grammar School, Stratford-on-Avon; New Kingswood School, Bath; and Helston Grammar School, Cornwall. After his arrival in Australia he lived for ten years in Victoria before moving to Queensland. He was a practising physician in Brisbane and investigated the possible use of pawpaw for medicinal purposes. He was the original manufacturer of well-known Queensland product, Lucas's Paw Paw Ointment.

  • Hornibrook, A Bibliography of Queensland Verse (1953) asserts that Lucas used the pseudonym 'Achilles Douglas' but this claim is discredited by research into Lucas undertaken by Dr Bill Metcalf in 2005.
