Sasha Soldatow was born in Plochingen, Germany of Russian parents. A speaker of Russian, he worked as a freelance journalist and a subtitler of Russian films for SBS Television. As well as writing and presenting performance poetry, he was involved in filmscript editing, the production and direction of videos and acting in theatre productions.He also exhibited, between 1974 and 1987, in the visual arts.
In 1985 Soldatow won the C. H. Currey Memorial Fellowship for his research on Harry Hooton. In 1989 he was awarded by the Literature Board of the Australia Council a period in its Venice Studio. In 1990 he was writer-in-residence at Long Bay Jail, Sydney, and in 1991 he was awarded a Fellowship from the Literature Board of the Australia Council. Soldatow read at many public forums between 1980 and 1989, including at the 1983 Sydney Festival, the Fifth Biennale of Sydney in 1984 and at Writers in the Park evenings at the Harold Park Hotel, Sydney, between 1985 and 1989. In 1991 he lived in Moscow for a period. After his return to Australia he lived in Melbourne for a time, then returned to Sydney.
His works include a self-published pamphlet entitled What is This Gay Community Shit? (1983) and the plays, The Ideologically Unsound Deviationists Perform a Marxist Play for an Audience of Anarchists (1978) and Percy Grainger's Theory of Music Based on Moaning (1980).
