BiographyHistory

Chahin Baker Sorekli was born in the Kurdish town of Mazra near the town of Kobani in West Kurdistan (the Syrian part). After finishing his secondary studies in the Syrian city of Aleppo in 1965, he left for Europe where he studied in Austria and Germany for three years. After his arrival in Australia he resumed formal study and in 1978 graduated from Macquarie University in Sydney, where he settled.

Baker Sorekli has also written many literary, educational and political articles, short stories and poems for various magazines and newspapers in Kurdish, English, Arabic and German. He has written several books in Kurdish, and writes also in English, Arabic and German and speaks some Turkish. In Australia, he has taught languages in high schools and has been a coordinator and presenter of the Kurdish language program on Radio 2SER FM in 1982 and 1983 and on Radio SBS 2EA from 1985. From 1979 - 1984 he served as president of the Australian-Kurdish Association, and was a member of the AJA and International PEN. He has read at various public forums in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and in 1991 in Stockholm and has worked as a journalist.
