Grant Caldwell began writing poetry while teaching economics in secondary schools in country Victoria. He has travelled, lived and worked in London, Morocco and Spain.
Caldwell returned to Australia in 1977, moved to Sydney and worked for a time on a small literary magazine, SCOPP and began writing full-time. In the late seventies and eighties he was part of the Performance Poetry movement, and read and performed his poetry at many venues in Sydney and Melbourne. He has received two Australia Council Fellowships (1992 and 1994) and two VicArts grants. In 2007 he was awarded funding for a self-organised residency at Heinrich Boll Cottage, Country Mayo, Ireland.
Since 1995 Caldwell has taught creative writing at The University of Melbourne and at Holmesglen TAFE. His poetry and short stories have been widely published and read on radio and television
