'Professor Garton's research interests are Australian social and cultural history with major research undertaken on the history of psychiatry, mental illness, eugenics, crime, poverty, policing, punishment and war repatriation. He teaches largely in the areas of theory and method, as well as the history of sexuality and has researched the government of problem populations in Australia, America and England from the 1880s to the 1950s.'
