1 3 y separately published work icon Doing Something for Australia : George Robertson and the Early Years of Angus and Robertson, Publishers : 1888-1900 Jennifer Alison , Melbourne : Bibliographical Society of Australia and New Zealand , 2009 Z1670299 2009 single work biography 'From tentative beginnings in 1888, Angus and Robertson soon hit their stride as publishers with the publication of Banjo Paterson's verses The Man from Snowy River. This book was a phenomenal success, surprising even its publishers. Snowy River was quickly followed by two successful Henry Lawson titles, In the Days When the World was Wide and While the Billy Boils.

From this foundation, Angus and Robertson went on to publish books for the Australian community for the better part of the next hundred years. The powerful force in the early publishing was George Robertson, who devoted himself to the task and who, with the continuing success of the firm's many books, truly believed he was "doing something for Australia."

This book tells the story of how Angus and Robertson operated as a business to achieve their success, which in effect tells the story of George Robertson himself.' (Publisher's blurb)

1 y separately published work icon Angus & Robertson as Publishers, 1880-1900: A Business History Jennifer Alison , Sydney : 1997 Z1294802 1997 single work thesis This thesis critiques the business history of the early publishing activities of Angus & Robertson, Australia's longest running and most successful publishing firm. The study investigates the firm as publisher, examining in particular the role of George Robertson. A model of a successful publisher is constructed from the writings of British and US publishers who flourished about the time of Robertson, and Robertson's performance is measured against this model. The study concludes that while Robertson benefitted from publishing in the favourable cultural conditions of the 1890s he also brought unique personal qualities to Australian publishing.

1 y separately published work icon The Private Press in Australia: A Study of its Foundations and the Work of Some Early Printers Jennifer Alison , Sydney : 1984 Z1294818 1984 single work thesis This pioneering study of private press printing in early twentieth-century Australia considers the nature of the private press and examines the role of three 'major printers': Samuel Rowe Simmons, William Baylebridge, Frank Wilmot, and five 'minor printers': J. A. Andrews, A. W. Brazier, Violet Teague and Geraldine Rede, Hugh McKay and J. Summers, and Sir Edward MacKenzie. It then examines whether these individuals as a group constituted a private press movement, and whether the private presses had any influence on each other or on Australian trade printing. Appendices include a list of works by the three 'major' printers and one of the 'minor' printers.
