BiographyHistory

R. 'Cleve' Potter received his initial education in the Glen Innes area and subsequently studied at the Teachers' Training College, Waverley, Sydney. After teaching for a period he became disillusioned with the education system and turned instead to building and carpentry.

Potter enlisted in the Army in August 1916 and, after receiving training in Cootamundra, New South Wales, and in the United Kingdom, was drafted into the 21st Battalion and saw active service in Belgium and France. When the 21st Battalion was disbanded he joined the 24th Battalion. Potter was discharged in late 1919.

Potter married Victoria May Barrett in 1922 and together they had two sons and a daughter. 'He died in his own home in November 1970 and it was at this time that his diaries were found and later transcribed and published by his two sons.'
