The Rev. Thomas Hilhouse Taylor (also known as Toso Taylor) was well known in colonial Australia for collaborating in adaptations of old-world pantomimes for the Australian stage. He has been credited with assisting
E.W. Royce as librettist for
Sinbad the Sailor; or, Tinbad the Tailor and the Wicked Ogre and the Good Fairy Submarina (1888) and
Aladdin; Or Harlequin the Wonderful Ring (1889). His other pantomimes include
Beauty and the Beast (1893) and
Cinderella; Or, The Little Glass Slipper (1894). Taylor also wrote the three-act musical comedy Fairy (1891) and collaborated with composer Christian Helleman on the
The Christian (1906).
In addition to his music theatre works, Taylor contributed lyrics to a number of patriotic songs and wrote the books
Buds and Blossoms (1885),
Euchred (1885) and the collection
The Hope of Man and Other Verses (ca. 1917).
