Susan Hampton writes poetry, drama, short stories, literary criticism and has a novel in progress. She has been a literary editor, poet, short story writer and teacher in creative writing and journalism courses and been a writer-in-residence at many universities. She was Writing Fellow at the Australian National University in 1993.

Hampton edits manuscripts for both new and published writers, and has edited poetry for The Canberra Times, as well as collections of poetry and literary criticism.

A resident of Canberra since 1992, Hampton's poetry includes both sonnets and longer poems. Her work has been praised by critics for being characterised by "warmth, sensitivity and wit".
