Leanne Frahm grew up in Brisbane, Indiana (USA) and Mackay in northern Queensland. She received a scholarship to James Cook University but left after two terms to work in a bank. While raising a family, she became involved in acting and directing plays. Her writing generally, and of science fiction in particular, developed after attending a Writers' Workshop in Sydney. She won the Ditmar for Best Short Story in 1981.
