Alekos Doukas was born in Moschonesia, Greece. He attended some years of high school in AÏvali, Asia Minor and Mytilene, Greece, but his studies were constantly interrupted by moving to avoid the unsettled political situation. He worked in various clerical jobs in Thessaloniki and on Mytilene. In 1920 he joined the Greek Army in Asia Minor and was wounded twice in action. Having returned to Greece, he studied poultry breeding by correspondence and took his diploma in 1926. Disappointed with the political situation in Greece, he emigrated to Australia, where he worked as a farm hand in various locations in the Victorian countryside. Having lived in Sydney and the New South Wales countryside, he finally settled in Melbourne. He was brother to the well-known Greek writer Strates Doukas.
