A trained researcher and fulltime writer, Maslen was the Education Editor of the Age from 1979 and, later, a regular correspondent on higher education for Campus Review.
In addition to his writing listed on AustLit he has also written Weather (1978), a secondary school text book. He is the husband of the artist Margaret Cilento (q.v.).
