Bruce Pratt began his working life as a roustabout and timber worker at the age of 13. During World War II he served with the AIF. In 1950, Pratt joined Angus & Robertson as an editor, later becoming General Editor of the Australian Encyclopaedia.
Pratt was married to children's book writer and illustrator, Pixie O'Harris.
