Paul Eggert is a professor of English. He read for degrees at the Universities of Sydney and Melbourne in Australia and at the University of Kent in the United Kingdom. He has taught in the areas of eighteenth to twentieth century British literature, Modernism, the Victorian novel, travel literature, print culture and editing theory. His field of expertise also includes theories of restoration of historic buildings and paintings and history of the book.

Eggert taught at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Victoria and the Royal Military College - Duntroon, Australian Capital Territory. He joined the University of New South Wales, UNSW Canberra at the Australian Defence Force Academy as a lecturer in English in 1986 serving as head of school 2001-2003. He is founding director of the Academy's Australian Scholarly Editions Centre. The Centre's major function is The Academy Editions of Australian Literature series, of which he was general editor from 1996-2007. He served on the General Editorial Committee of the Colonial Texts Series and has been on the Council of the Bibliographical Society of Australia and New Zealand (filling the position of President from 2003-2005). He was elected president (2012-2014) of the United States of America based Society for Textual Scholarship, the first Overseas scholar to be elected to the position.

Paul Eggert is a member of the AustLit Advisory Board, serving as chair of the Board since 2005. He also served as co-chief CI on the NeCTAR-funded Australian Electronic Scholarly Editing tool development project. In 1998 Eggert was elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities and in October 2009 was appointed to a five year term as an Australian Research Council Professorial Fellow. In 2001 he received a Centenary Medal.
