Melbourne broadcaster and journalist Terry Lane was educated at Gawler High School, South Australia and ordained as a minister in the Churches of Christ in 1962. He worked as a minister until 1974, then worked in the Methodist Church's Department of Religious Education and the ABC's Religious Department. In 1977 he began a radio talk-back show for the ABC which ran for eleven months. Since 1982 he has been a broadcaster on Radio National, including producing the programme 'National Interest'. He began writing a weekly column for The Age in 1991. Some of his articles and interviews have been published in his books Hobbyhorses (1990) and More Than Meets the Ear (1991). He has also co-authored books on Australian politics and society.
Lane is a founding member and former secretary of Free Speech Victoria. He once spent an afternoon in jail for distributing anti-war leaflets deemed by the Melbourne City Council to be litter.
