A television journalist for the ABC and author of feature stories for many leading newspapers, Byrne is perhaps best known as the long-running host of The Book Club (originally First Tuesday Book Club), ABC Television's long-running book-review and interview program (2006-2017).
Born in Melbourne, Byrne was educated at St Margaret's School in Berwick, Melbourne. She began her career as a cadet journalist on the Age at age 16, and has worked as the Age's San Francisco correspondent, as a researcher for The Day Tonight (Melbourne), as a presenter on 60 Minutes and Foreign Correspondent, and as the narrator on Chris Lilley's We Can Be Heroes.
