BiographyHistory

Born in New Zealand to parents originally from Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

Garton settled in Sydney later in life, where he married and trained as an architect. He enlisted for World War I in Sydney on 27 June 1917, by judiciously shaving some eight years off his actual age, claiming to have been born in 1872.

He died in Papua New Guinea, where he had been a government official since at least 1922.

Garton's primary work is his Lays of Northern Zealandia (Auckland: H. Brett, 1885), which is not individually indexed on AustLit.
