Jo Lampert has a Masters of Education from the University of Toronto, and a PhD from QUT. She has lectured at QUT in the field of children's literature, and has had a particular research focus on post-September 11 children's literature, as demonstrated in her 2009 book Children's Fiction About 9/11: Ethnic, Heroic and National Identities. She has also had professional interests in adult literacy, Indigenous education, social justice, equity, and anti-racism measures.
