BiographyHistory

Doctor Smith began work at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in 1896 and in 1899 was appointed Physician to the infectious diseases unit, city coroner, inspector of anatomy and chairman of the Central Board of Health. He was at one time the Head of the Health Department of South Australia. He published around 40 works on anthropology, sanitation and health between 1899 and 1928. His wide-ranging published lecture transcripts include The Medico-Legal Aspects of Infanticide and Concealment of Birth (1907), The Place of the Australian Aboriginal in Recent Anthropological Research (1907), Peace (1910), Woman and Her Possibilities (1913), Shakespeare and the Physician (1914), Farm Sanitation (1921), Some Recent Scottish Poetry (1922) and Health (1923). Smith also wrote the travel book In Southern Seas: Wanderings of a Naturalist (1924).
